Suicide: A Growing Concern for American Youth

According to a 2015 report from the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 1 in 5 youth aged 13 to 18 years of age experiences a seriously debilitating mental disorder at some point during their adolescence. Troubling statistics from the 2015 Youth Risk Behavior Survey revealed 17% of youth seriously considered suicide in the previous year and more than 14% made a plan. The nation’s youth are suffering with one of the most painful and debilitating illnesses. Depression can leave youth feeling worthless, guilty, and devoid of hope. Mental health is not often a popular topic of conversation due to stigma and fear, leaving students afraid to talk about these serious feelings.

If you do not want your student to participate in the Suicide Prevention Awareness Campaign, please submit your wishes in writing, to your student's school front office.

Each year, Tracy Unified School District provides Suicide Prevention Awareness instruction to all 8th and 10th grade students, in accordance with AB 2246, which is known as the Pupil Suicide Prevention Law. This awareness campaign is scheduled for September 11^th – 15^th, 2023. This is a voluntary awareness lesson for students, that aims to help them better identify the signs of suicidal risk.

If you do not wish for your child to participate in this awareness campaign, please communicate this, in writing, and give it to your student's school front office. A virtual parent informational meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, September 6^th , 2023 from 5-6pm for 10^th graders and Thursday, September 7^th , 2023 from 5-6pm for 8^th graders.
