Principal’s Message

Principal, Dr. Barbara Silver

Welcome to Monte Vista Middle School, home of the Mustangs. As principal of MVMS, it gives me immense pleasure to welcome you and your family to our school. We have returned to some normalcy these last two years after surviving Distance Learning. We have made significant academic gains as well, including increasing all test scores and housing the number one math team in the county, three years running.

At Monte Vista, we strive for excellence in everything we do. We have several outstanding and rigorous programs, including a superb music program (orchestra, concert band, jazz band, marching band), a certified AVID program, and a rigorous Gifted and Talented program for high achievers.

In addition, we believe that a healthy student will progress at a faster rate. Our physical education program is exceptional and has an excellent field and facility, including two gyms, a bike room, and a beautifully groomed field.

Our fully qualified and credentialed faculty is among the best in the nation, with several teachers and administrators holding advanced degrees. In the end, our goal is to send the best freshmen to high school.

As for my own history, I was born and raised in Oakland. I hold a BA in International Studies and Spanish, an MA in Multicultural Education, and a doctorate in Educational Administration and Leadership with my dissertation focused on equity and dual language methodology. I taught Spanish and French in Stockton Unified and San Joaquin Delta College before becoming a high school administrator. I was a high school administrator for 10 years and English Learner Program Supervisor before becoming principal of Monte Vista. My passion is in equity in education and service to under-served populations.

My door is always open for students and families. I invite all parents and families to get involved with their children’s education while they are here at Monte Vista. Here’s to a great 2023-2024 school year!
